At a time of global pandemic, understanding the immunological mechanisms driving the host
response to viruses and pathogens, and designing strategies to manipulate them is of utmost
importance. The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC, Leiden, The Netherlands) has a long
tradition of multidisciplinary pioneering research in immunology. Within the LUMC Immunity,
Infection and Tolerance research area*, a series of online lectures will be given during one
week aimed at providing insights into the latest developments in the two emerging fields of
Chemical Immunology and Immunometabolism.
In the framework of the new LUMC Global initiative, 80 international students from our partner
universities will be welcomed to (virtually) attend the online lecture series, on offer free of
charge. The program (see enclosed) will mostly consist of ~45-min interactive lectures on 4
major themes: chemical tools for studying/manipulating the immune system, regulation of
immune cell functions by intracellular metabolism, gut microbiota in infection, metabolic and
autoimmune diseases, and regulation of metabolic homeostasis by immune cells. International
participants will be granted a special LUMC Global Frontiers of Science Certificate as proof of
full participation.
The course is suitable for Master students (medicine, biomedicine, medical technology,
pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences and life sciences), PhDs and Post-doctoral fellows.
